Nella Cattedrale

La cattedrale di Strasburgo è un capolavoro assoluto dell’arte gotica. La costruzione della cattedrale romanica, di cui resta solo la cripta e la pianta, iniziò nel 1015. La guglia dell’edificio attuale, in stile gotico, fu terminata nel 1439.
“Prodigio di grandezza e leggiadria“, secondo le parole di Victor Hugo, la sua facciata è di una dovizia ornamentale fantasmagorica. La guglia, alta 142 metri, è un capolavoro di leggerezza ed eleganza. Fino al XIX secolo, questa cattedrale era l’edificio più alto della cristianità.
All’esterno, la facciata è il più grande libro illustrato di tutto il Medioevo. Le centinaia di sculture che sembrano staccarsi dalla parete ne accentuano i chiaroscuri. Il tono dell’arenaria rosa cambia secondo le ore del giorno e il colore del cielo. Le sere d’estate, la luce crea una scenografia incantevole.
All’interno, la navata slanciata ispira al raccoglimento. Le vetrate del XII-XIV secolo e il rosone creano giochi suggestivi. L’organo monumentale presenta una sponda con meccanismi degna di nota. L’orologio astronomico d’epoca rinascimentale, con meccanismi del 1842 e un corteo di apostoli che si può ammirare tutti i giorni alle 12:30, è in sé un capolavoro.

Strasbourg Cathedral is an absolute masterpiece of Gothic art. Construction of the Romanesque cathedral, of which only the crypt and ground plan remain, began in 1015. The spire of the current building, in Gothic style, was completed in 1439.
A "prodigy of grandeur and gracefulness", in the words of Victor Hugo, its façade is of a phantasmagorical ornamental abundance. The spire, 142 metres high, is a masterpiece of lightness and elegance. Until the 19th century, this cathedral was the tallest building in Christendom.
On the outside, the façade is the largest picture book of the Middle Ages. The hundreds of sculptures that seem to detach themselves from the wall accentuate its chiaroscuro. The tone of the pink sandstone changes according to the time of day and the colour of the sky. On summer evenings, the light creates an enchanting setting.
Inside, the slender nave inspires meditation. The 12th-14th-century stained glass windows and the rose window create suggestive effects. The monumental organ has a noteworthy bank with mechanisms. The Renaissance astronomical clock, with mechanisms dating from 1842 and a procession of apostles that can be admired every day at 12:30 p.m., is a masterpiece in itself.
