At our pond at home, I usually see them flying away just as I approach the water.

I always turned off all the sound on my camera -- some I've been told you can lower, but not mute it.
Mine is muted .. of course, found out a little problem there ... did a video - no sound !
So, figured my way around that boondoggle!

Having a zoom/bridge camera is how I managed many water bird photos!

I don't think my problem is the camera. It is my dogs and I making such a ruckus during the approach.

Photography with dogs is a challenge. When I walk along the river, the birds disappear when dogs come by.

Thanks for the visit, Esther. You are right. The dogs chase many things away. On the other hand, they often find things that I never would have noticed. This particular photo was taken in a place I would never take the dogs to. I was in a kayak and there were alligators nearby.

Danke schön, Ingrid . Das ist kein Graureiher . Es ist ein Kanadareiher (Ardea herodias) . Sie wohnen in Nordamerika und Zentralamerika .
