Thanks, Diane. I've known about them for many years, but this is the first time I've seen them. They are growing in a mature forest that hasn't been disturbed for over 20 years.

I couldn't resist: "Monotropa uniflora, also known as ghost plant, Indian pipe or corpse plant [!], is a herbaceous perennial plant native to temperate regions of Udmurtiya in European Russia, Asia, North America and northern South America, but with large gaps between areas. More at Wikipedia..." Seems they are a nearly global phenomenon!
