Yes, it's a very useful plant. You probably have a type of Arundinaria. This one is Phyllostachys nigra 'Henonis'. I was rather obsessed with bamboo some years ago, but now I mostly let it grow and use it for making simple things.

I am thinking of covering a gap in the fence with bamboo plants about 6-8 feet in length 5 feet high., I hope it grows robustly rather than us having to wait a couple of years before it becomes effective.

Wow, great shot and a unique perspective! I'm going to find a hardy, clumping one for a big pot. I know there are a couple of them suitable for cold winters (RSDA Zone 5).
