Der Dom wurde im Zeitraum von 1220 bis 1522 aus dem für die Region typischen Kalkstein aus Jaumont erbaut und ist das Ergebnis der Verbindung zwei verschiedener Kirchen. Mit dem 42 m hohen Gewölbe ist die Kathedrale eines der größten gotischen Gebäude Europas. Den Spitznamen „Laterne Gottes“ verdankt sie der Fensterfläche von 6500 m²: Diese wurde vom 13. bis in das 20. Jahrhundert von Hermann von Münster, Thiébault de Lixheim, Valentin Bousch, Jacques Villon oder auch Marc Chagall entworfen.
