Aldeburgh Scallop Shell

Aldeburgh Scallop Shell
Hambling's Scallop (2003) stands on the north end of Aldeburgh beach. It is a tribute to Benjamin Britten and is pierced with the words "I hear those voices that will not be drowned" from his opera Peter Grimes.
Created from stainless steel by Suffolk-based artist Maggi Hambling, it stands 15 feet (4.6 metres) high, and was unveiled in November 2003. The piece is made up of two interlocking scallop shell. Many locals don't like it, and it has been vandalised by some. I think it's majestic and a wonderful tribute to Benjamin Britten.

This is now quite a famous sculpture, Cheryl. It seems that some of the locals and visitors do not like ir, especially when it was first erected. Here is one comment written by a certain Charles Spencer:
"I was recently in Aldeburgh, a place I love and have been visiting for more than 40 years. Walking along the beach with my wife, we spotted what looked like a hideous pile of rusting scrap metal on that beautifully desolate curve of shingle. We walked towards it where it was revealed as a sculpture of scallop shells by Maggi Hambling, supposedly a tribute to Benjamin Britten, that is as ugly from afar as it is kitsch at close quarters. It has been repeatedly vandalised since it was erected in 2003, and there have been petitions by the locals to have it removed. But there it remains, spoiling one of the finest views on the east coast."

Hi Amelia, so unusual, and you captured it real well, this must be a real tourist attraction, it seems to be a nice tribute to Mr. Britten even tho the locals don't like it....
Hope you are well my friend, hugs and best wishes, Sarah
