The talented Bill Withers recorded his composition "Lean On Me" on his second album "Still Bill". In 1972 the single topped both the Billboard Top One Hundred and the Soul chart while peaking at number four of the Easy Listening chart. A number of the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band provided backup.

The successful 1987 pop and Dance chart topping cover of "Lean On Me" by Club Nouveau (Samuelle Prater, Jay King, Valerie Watson, Denzil Foster and Thomas McElroy) is featured on the 1986 platinum album "Life, Love And Pain". Bill Withers won a Grammy for his composition as Best R&B song for this version.
