Written in the mid-eighteenth century this "Happy Day" (Doddridge - Rimbault) version was recorded in 1913 by Trinity Choir (Olive Kline, Marguerite Dunlap, Harry MacDonough and Reinald Werrenrath). "Happy Day" is set to an 1704 melody composed by J. A. Freylinghausen.
Founded by Edwin Hawkins and Betty Watson as The Northern California State Youth Choir of the Church of God in Christ in 1967, The Edwin Hawkins Singers (Dorothy Morrison lead, Edwin, Tramaine and Walter Hawkins, Betty Watson, Elaine Kelly, Margarette Branch, Rueben Franklin, Ruth Lyons, Donald Cashmere and over three dozen other singers) produced and distributed the album "Let Us Go Into the House of the Lord". A local radio personality aired the track "Oh, Happy Day" (Edwin R. Hawkins) and it was released as a commercial single. The result was a number four hit on Billboard, a Grammy win and a worldwide hit!
