Richard Berry and the Pharaohs started the "Louie, Louie" (Berry) craze with what was originally a B side in 1957. You can hear the lyric with this release that became a regional hit in the Pacific northwest.
From a fifty dollar one-take recording session we get the 1963 version everyone knows is by The Kingsmen (Joe Ely, Lynn Easton, Mike Mitchell, Don Gallucci snd Bob Nordby). This cover peaked at number two and was actually the subject of an FBI investigation into obscenity.
