Confused
What colour has the word black and the word white in this image? The question brings your mind in a twist, a state of cognitive dissonance. You see black where the answer should be white and v.v. Cognitive dissonance is the mental discomfort (psychological stress) experienced by a person who simultaneously holds two or more contradictory beliefs, ideas, or values. This discomfort is triggered by a situation in which a belief of a person clashes with new evidence perceived by that person.…

Solarbûn li dijî qirkirinê (Solidarity against Genocide)
Created from Shutterstock Stock Photograph purchased for Article “You have given up on us. You are leaving us to be slaughtered.” [1] [Gen. Mazloum Kobani Abdi, Commander, Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces] While I oppose any coups, I believe President Trump’s misguided and reckless decision to abandon the Kurds is reason enough for voters to deny him a second term. Personally I cannot in good conscience vote for a President whose actions unleash genocide, nor one w…

The Hidden New York City
While New York City, a metropolis of 8.6 million is known for its urban bustle and towering skyscrapers currently with four over 100 stories tall, Central Park with its diverse ecosystems and abundance of flora and fauna provides a hidden view of New York City and a welcome escape from the urban din. “Under the forest canopy of the Ravine , Manhattan’s skyline is hidden and the rushing sound of a waterfall drowns the city noise. When Park designers Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux create…

Setbacks and Disappointment: Hidden Opportunities
Created from Images purchased from Shutterstock For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” [Jeremiah 2 9:11 ] Disappointment, setbacks and adversity “are inevitable parts of life, yet difficult… to deal with.” [1] Yet there is little comfort in knowing this and even when a spiritual explanation is added – “It happens for a reason” – they are still not easy to accept since we often never…

Exploring ipernity Explore
People often wonder how the images become picked to ipernity Explore . And here I try to figure it out and explain, as well as I can. The very first thing one needs to understand is that Explore is more or less an overview on what is popular during last few days. However, popularity is a tricky concept. One should keep in mind that what is popular may not match with any subjective or shared understanding on what is quality . If number of ipernity members like images of fences, or more p…

The camera is dead, long live the camera!
I saw this rather interesting news shared on social media, and thought it may interest also peeps around here: ➽ Camera sales are falling sharply by Om Malik So, supposedly phone cameras are taking over. Whether this is a bad or good thing depends on the point of view. Someone could call that as a "progress", and some may see it as a "paradigm shift". Or it can be even a "philosophical revolution". We all can't be masters of photography and professionals, but that should not stop…

Daniel Rozin, and mechanical mirrors
I always try to find new ideas for photography, and pixelation is one of them. Here's a very inspiring artist. Daniel Rozin makes "mirrors" from somewhat any materials and surfaces, and gives a new perspctive on pixelated images. One possibility then is to try find a software that produces different shape of "pixels", other than just squares or dots.

Anchorage's Record-Breaking Summer of 2019
Prior to 2019, July 2016 was Anchorage, Alaska's warmest month on record. Summer 2019 as a whole was even warmer than July 2016. The duration of the excessive warmth and extreme temperatures recorded during the summer would have been very unlikely, if not improbable, without human-induced climate change.

Historic European Heat Offers Latest Symptom of Climate Change
The second of the most intense pair of heat waves ever to roll across the European continent is now departing Scandinavia and headed for Iceland and Greenland where it will finally dissipate altogether. On account of these unprecedented bursts of heat, the weather record book has been rewritten across much of Europe. All-time national heat records were set in Belgium (41.8°C/107°F), France (46.0°C/115°F), Germany (42.6°C/109°F), Luxembourg (39.0°C/102°F), and the Netherlands (40.7°C/105°F). A pr…

[EN] Dear members and friends of ipernity, This morning at 10:09 am the automatic monitoring systems of our website reported a fundamental dysfunction. Many of you have also quickly informed us about this outage. We thank you for that. The problem was that one of the main servers we hosted at the Amazon Web Service unexpectedly stopped. What to do when it rains
Jane and Arlene are outside their nursing home, having a drink and a smoke, when it starts to rain. Jane pulls out a condom, cuts off the end, puts it over her cigarette, and continues smoking. Arlene: What in the hell is that? Jane: A condom. This way my cigarette doesn't get wet. Arlene: Where did you get it? Jane: You can get them at any pharmacy. The next day, Arlene hobbles herself into the local pharmacy and announces to the pharmacist that she wants a box of condoms.…

Philanthropy and Ipernity
Is it better to give the gift of an individual subscription to Ipernity than click the donate button? My first thought is yes but it’s for one person not the whole group of users. What about, for example gifting 10 subscriptions versus donating the same amount? Building up the number of users ( at least temporarily, they may not stay ) versus adding to the general funds for a future project that may eventually encourage more users to join and for the long term. In the short term I st…

How to add geolocation before upload
Currently on ipernity 'Photos' pages the following notice is shown on right margin: "It is recommended to have GPS data in the meta data (EXIF) of the images before the initial upload." The reason why this recommendation is given is that the Google Maps quota may become exceeded easily if many users search and use it get geolocation for already uploaded images. To avoid this it would help if more people would start to define geolocation before uploading the images. How to do that d…

google abuse
