Budgerigars are the smallest species of indigenous Australian parrot, and are found wild throughout the drier parts of Australia where the species has survived harsh desert conditions for the last five million years. in cities one usually encounters them only in cages. They are one of Australia's best known birds, being found as pets around the world!

For 90 years Gwalia was a goldmining town. The mine closed in the 1960's and people just abandoned it. Now it sits quietly disintegrating in the middle of the West Australian desert, near Leonora.

On the 2,700km Eyre Highway, there are no medical facilities for 2400 kms. If there is an emergency, The Royal Flying Doctor Service uses sections of the highway as a runway, in order to carry people by plane to hospitals. It would take at least 24 hours by vehicle. The Flying Doctor service operates all over remote Australia.
