Zanskar. Parkachik Glacier

Zanskar. Parkachik Glacier
Suru Valley in the Zanskar Valley of India. Retreating glacier, almost disappearing. 10 years ago it filled the whole valley far below for several kilometres. We climbed 500 meters from the road to get to the retreating base of this glacier, at 4500 meters on the other side of the Himalaya in the Central Asia massifs of Ladakh.

A very impactful photo of this retreating glacier, Diana, and beautifully composed.

I understand retreating glaciers were some of the early warning signs of global warming and scientists have been monitoring them for decades now. I found this article by the BBC very interesting in detailing the impact that the loss of glaciers will have on the planet in a future that is no longer a distant one: www.bbc.com/future/article/20210810-the-multi-billion-dollar-giants-that-are-melting-away

A great image of this glacier, Diana. I've just had a look at the article Annalia has referenced and it does indeed make sobering reading. As your image was taken 12 years ago, I find myself wondering how this glacier would look now!
