Emu pair

Emu pair
Emus are Australia's national bird and are found across the continent. I was pleased to find this pair wandering around a local National Park. It was a slight concern when one turned around and took more interest in the camera, as they can become aggressive at times.

Oh wow, what an amazing series, George. They're so beautiful. I never knew they were your National bird. You have the most wonderful flora and fauna there. How cool!

This reminds me of a video I just saw on YouTube that was pretty sweet about an Emu that I'll share with you: www.youtube.com/watch?v=LtUZlL6JiqA

Thank you very much, Karen. We have no "official" national bird, but these are on our Coat of Arms and are considered the national bird by most people. An interesting video link with the pet emu.

Merci de partager avec nous cette magnifique série..Ils semblerait qu'ils sont agressifs et qui ont même attaqué des touristes.
Bonne journée.

Merci bien, Malik. They aren't normally aggressive, but it does pay to give them a little space to avoid problems.

A superb series George. You can imagine my surprise when I thought I saw an emu in a field just up the road from my home. It turned out to be a Rhea bird that had escaped from somewhere! It was recaptured after a couple of days.

Thank you, Rosa. Yes, seeing one of these (or a Rhea) would certainly be unexpected for you!

Well, agressive like geese but not dangerous as bears and big felines! Glad you took the pictures and got away intact !!!!

Thank you, Isabel. Having had geese, I'd say these are less aggressive, the difference though is that they are somewhat larger. :-) We certainly don't need the bears and big felines!

Thank you for sharing this fascinating encounter, George. They are so particular and interesting, definitely a bird that reminds us that they are the distant descendants of dinosaurs! I can see the gleam of interest in the red eye of the one that turned to check your camera out. With those legs, I imagine they can move quickly and be on top of you before you know it! Most animals will not mess with humans unless we disturb them first, but it sometimes hard to know what they will interpret as a provocation. Glad your camera did not prove to be more than fleeting distraction to this pair!

Many thanks, Annalia. Yes the dinosaur ancestry does indeed show through. Out in the open they would certainly stay away, but in the National Park there's always the chance they've had more contact with people, possibly been fed picnic scraps etc. In close quarters they can sometimes peck if driven by curiosity or an expectation of being fed. Worse, they have been known to kick with their strong legs and sharp toes.

Never seen such Emu's in real life, only nandu's in South America. Beautiful animals and I think they are bigger than Nandus.

Thank you very much, Berny. Yes, these are second in size only to ostriches. They can grow to reach a height of about 2 metres.
