This storm was a small concentrated cell that moved slowly across the valley and my field of view. IT was very easy to get shots of. One technique is to set your camera on a tripod and bang away, then delete anything with no lightning. You can also put on a ND filter and stop down the lens so its open for a longer amount of time. This shot was 3 or four secs with no ND filter. IVe now purchased a 2 stop ND which I'm using on light trail pics of traffic. I'm gonna use that in the future. Doesn't rain much here in Vegas, I only get a couple chances a year to try and shoot these. This one I had to get out of bed 3 hours before work, while fun, makes for a long day!
