I am testing an old Russian (Soviet) MTO 500mm f/8 mirror tele lens
(borrowed from a friend).
It appears to be a good choice for street portraits :)

You caught a good moment - and just the right DOF! Nice work.

Thank you, Leon!
A moment later the boy looked more in my direction, but obviously I was not ready - rewinding the film takes some time ;o

Ces longues focales permettent de saisir à la volée des expressions intéressantes... Une belle prise de vue

Remarkable portrait - you got a good eye and a steady hand - well done!

Oh no, I used a tripod. But I have a problem. The lens is so heavy that it stresses the tripod head too much. The lens itself has a tripod mount, but M39/M42 reduction and threads of the lens and the camera body are off so supporting the lens makes the camera askew. To put it right, I have to tilt the tripod head and it does not like it...
Well, I managed to steady it that time :)
Thank you very much!

I like the sideways glance. The lens looks sharp for a mirror type. The narrow DOF really brings out the face.

Thank you, Stephen.
I plan to shoot more faces like that. Our market square will be a good place to start :)

Thats impressive -I have a later version of the 500mm Soviet mirror, a 3M 5A, and got some good stuff with it, but it never got used much in England as there is never so much light...

Thank you very much, Richard!
But you do not need that much light for f8!
Actually it is my favorite aperture for most of my shots taken on dark, gloomy days here in Poland.
And this boy was hiding in deep shadows, still the lens / camera combo managed the scene alright :)

Yes its very good as are the rest of the shots with it. The bokeh is nice too not so doughnutty, though that can be good too

Lovely portrait. He looks very alert. A real "poster boy" for the scouts ;-)

I would say a successful test, as well as a fantastic candid photo!

An interesting series of test shots, with equally interesting comments about the 'bokeh'. I note that the dough-nuts are not prominent in this picture, which I like for the long-lens perspective as well as for the well captured facial expression!

Thank you very much John for taking interest in this series :)
It is my first encounter with mirror lens and I plan to learn as much as possible before the owner asks me to return it ;)
