Madeira verfügt über mehrere Mesoklimata. Im Norden der Insel regnet es häufig, der Süden ist dagegen subtropisch warm. Im Sommerhalbjahr liegt die Insel im Einflussbereich des Nordostpassats, im Winterhalbjahr liegt sie im Westwindgürtel. Der vorherrschende Wind kommt aus Nordost. Er entsteht vor der Küste Portugals und zieht in Richtung auf die Kapverdischen Inseln.
Dieser Wind bringt Feuchtigkeit mit sich und verursacht hohe Wellen an der Nordküste und oft, besonders morgens, unbeständiges Wetter an der Ostseite der Insel. Bei westlicher Windrichtung kann es im Osten der Insel sonnig und trocken sein, während es im Süden und im Westen regnet.

Madeira has several mesoclimates. In the north of the island it rains frequently, while the south is subtropically warm. In the summer months, the island is influenced by the north-east trade wind, while in the winter months it lies in the westerly wind belt. The prevailing wind is from the northeast. It originates off the coast of Portugal and moves towards the Cape Verde Islands. This wind brings humidity and causes high waves on the north coast and often, especially in the morning, unsettled weather on the east side of the island. With a westerly wind direction, it can be sunny and dry in the east of the island, while rainy in the south and west.

The average daily maximum temperature varies from 19 degrees Celsius in January and February to 26 degrees Celsius in August and September.

Ingenious open irrigation systems, the levadas, carry water from the rainier north to the south, to the plantations and gardens.
