I try explaining to my Spanish students how I prefer to buy, cook and eat Brussel sprouts in the UK. And that is straight off the stalk as in your PiP. Like this, they are small, nutty and almost sweet. In Madrid they are invariably 3 times the size in plastic bags or loose and are so sulphurous as to be almost inedible, imho. I have to draw a picture on the board of the stalk with its sprouts but no one has ever seen such a thing. I assumed that there weren't enough frosty nights for perfect Brussel sprout growing conditions in the Iberian Peninsula, until I saw this PiP (I assume the shot was taken in Portugal). Interesting!

Yes Andy, the shot was taken on the Royal Garden of Queluz Palace 7 km as the crow flies from Centre Lisbon.
So is is not only temperature but family.
In Weesen, CH, 70 km South East of Zurich, each winter I had them "swimming" out of the last snow, end of February to end of March, the first green legumes of the year and they were delicious, today, or so they seemed to me, for the mind has its own tricks.
Thank you for the talk.
