Canadian surfaces

I have re-selected the photos for this album in an attempt to include photos that were more like the ones in American Surfaces, but it turned out I don't have any. So we're stuck with these,

The shots I took of wintry Toronto today didn't work out, so I've recycled a shot of a hockey game in 2015 between two junior teams that today are just memories. Norfolk winger Martin Friedrich heads for the puck while Komoka goaltender Jason Slavich keeps an eye on it, too. That's the Norfolk in Ontario, by the way. This was the first and only game in which I saw an Australian player score. And the first and only game in which I have seen an Australian player. And there were two of them!

Front Street Boogie-woogie

06 Jul 2016 9 13 176
Toronto ====== Another shot that seems to me to have been inspired by Mondrian's Broadway Boogie-woogie , even though there's little resemblance. rdhinmn's suggestion that it was inspired by Escher appeals to me, too, though.

CN Tower, Toronto

Toronto-Dominion Centre

The building is the TD Bank Tower (Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Bregman + Hamann Architects, 1967) in Toronto. It is one of seven building that constitute the Toronto-Dominion Centre; three of them are by Mies and three more are in this style. The three buildings by Mies are the last of his North American period. This is the world HQ of TD Bank (aka Toronto-Dominion Bank and TD Canada Trust).

White tulips with red flames, the official tulip of Canada's sesquicentennial this year (the national colours are red and white). They look flowerier if you click the pic for the large version. Bred in the Netherlands, which has helped us out with tulips a lot. This year is the sesquicentennial of the federation; its anniversary is celebrated on July 1; We do not for some reason celebrate the anniversary of our independence (which was made law on December 11, 1931).

New City Hall (1965) in the background. It is usually attributed to Viljo Revell, but he thought his colleagues Heikki Castren, Bengt Lundsten, and Seppo Valjus should also be credited.

The vigil on the sidewalk, organized by Nishnawbe Aski Nation, started on July 20 -- three months old today. Massey Hall, Toronto

10 Feb 2011 18 24 817
An old photo re-edited. Massey Hall was built in 1894 as a place to perform secular choral concerts at modest ticket prices. As you can see, three windows have been punched into the carving of the building's name, and a fire escape was added to the front in the early twentieth century. Jazz fans know Massey Hall as the site of the Jazz at Massey Hall concert in 1953, the only time Max Roach, Charles Mingus, Bud Powell, Charlie Parker, and Dizzy Gillespie performed together (as The Quintet). So for the Sight and Sound group I offer their performance that night of "Hot House": www.youtube.com/watch?v=i06rjXGH_KI =============== It turns out that Massey Hall portrayed the Baltimore movie theatre in The Shape of Water . Since it's a listed building, the marquee and other fittings had to be mounted without touching the building.
