Thanks, Joe. You've just pointed out to me the role public art plays in Toronto -- it's a relief from the boxy buildings. I'm not a fan of this sculpture, or of another half a block away, but they do relieve the rectangularity.

There's something very impersonal about this one. The city of the future, maybe? I don't know whether to read the sculpture as anguished or threatening, or both. And the buildings are imperturbable.

I saw it as threatening, Bob, but I guess the Royal Bank and its gold-impregnated windows probably wouldn't blink an eye, if they had any.

As I mentioned to Joe, Andy, relieving the boredom of all the rectangular buildings in downtown Toronto is probably one of the chief functions of public art there.

Thanks, Keith. There have been two types of contrast mantiones so far: contrasts is shapes and contrasts in signification, for want of a better word. My reaction to this was initially that it seemed sinister, so I'm happy to see all the interpretations here.

Maybe I watched too many horror movies when I was young.
