Passsers-by were warned to stay away

Feature: Nuclear Lake, Pawling, New York

The United Nuclear Corporation had a facility on 1180 acres of woodland in Dutchess County, New York. It was closed after a "glove box" exploded, possibly spreading some plutonium. The company said it had all been cleaned up. It donated the property to the National Park Service for incorporation into the Appalachian Trail. Another reporter, named Sari Koshetz, and I investigated in 1979.
