A Dunster Castle View

A Dunster Castle View
Dunster Castle in Somerset captured from the main A39 road on a cold March day.

The castle was built on the side of a 200 ft steep hill called the Tor overlooking Dunster village. The original castle was a timber motte and bailey building built after the Battle of Hastings in 1066 by William de Mohun.
At the time the base of the Tor would have been surrounded by sea, offering a natural defence.

In the 13th Century the castle was partially rebuilt in stone and in 1330 the castle passed into the hands of John de Mohun who was soon severely in debt, leaving his wife Joan to take over the running of the estate. She agreed upon John's death to sell the castle to Elizabeth Lutterell when she herself died However Joan outlived Elizabeth and Sir Hugh Lutterell took over the castle in 1404.

The castle was extended and renovated over the years and the family lived in the property until the late 20th Century. In 1976 Colonel Walter Lutterell gave the castle and much of its contents to the National Trust.

Dunster Castle is a Grade 1 listed building

The castle seems to be preserved in good condition and, thanks to this photo, we can admire it in all its details.

Thank you very much Fabio. It is open to the public and the grounds are lovely too. When we visited there years ago I loved the orange trees there

Superb capture of this iconic west country castle on what looks to be a cold March day!
I note the differing window styles from additions over the centuries, I guess.

Thank you very much Lothar. As a National Trust property it will be preserved in good condition.
The Lutterells did actually lose it for a while. Crippling death duties meant it was sold but they continued to live there as tenants. They eventually bought it back before giving it to the National Trust.

Hi Carol, and nice to see you back...
I like this picture very much!
It is a very different and exciting composition. As Roger says you can see the evolution of the castle by different stonework and windows...
Fantastic colours too
Best Wishes, HWW,, and stay safe!!

Thank you very much Peter. That is really nice of you.

I guess the same can probably be said for a lot of castles of similar age, but it is nice that the additions and renovations here still seem to blend well despite the differences

Ecobird club has replied to Armando Taborda club
Thank you very much Armando. I am pleased you like it. There is a small lay-bye down on the main road where you can get this shot with the castle in the distance between the trees. I was lucky as it was enpty - and dry!! We visited the castle years ago and there was an orangery in the grounds which was lovely, but I understand this is now a cafe and there is a lake with swans. That is progress I guess, but at least there is coffee and cake!!

Besst wishes to you both

Thank you very much Misou. I remember the grounds were also beautiful. Dunster itself is charming with cobbled streets and a wonderful old yarn market, a lovely old church and attractive buildings. Near to Christmas they hold a 'Dunster by Candlelight' event where everyone dresses up and you feel as if you have been transported back into history.

Ecobird club has replied to Joe, Son of the Rock club
Thank you very much Joe. It is probably easier to capture the castle from way down below on the road rather than from the castle grounds. I have not been inside the castle for well over 40 years so maybe it is time to revisit and see what has changed in that time.

Thank you very much Herb. That is really nice of you. Lucky you found somewhere to turn around, - it does get awfully busy which is a shame as it really is a charming little place.
We did visit the castle 40 odd years ago but I imagine it must have changed quite a bit since then.

A very impressive castle and image, Carol. I found your notes very interesting too and it's surprising that the castle stayed with the one family for so long! HWW and best wishes.
Ecobird club has replied to tiabunna club
Thank you very much George. Maybe it is because it has stayed in the same family for so long. Alexander Lutterell died in 1944 and when they could not afford the death duties the castle and land were sold to a property firm and the family remained in the castle as tenants until 1954 when the bought it back again, so they must really have loved it. Now it is is the hands of the National Trust I would hope it's upkeep is assured.

A fine composition of this wonderful castle Carol, It certainly has an interesting history. It is nice to see a castle in such good condition, unlike many that are remains only; a result of various wars and neglect over the centuries.

All the best and enjoy the rest of the day, Doug
12 days ago.
Ecobird club has replied to Doug Shepherd club
Thank you very much Doug. Maybe it is because it has been lived in by the same family for yearrs who have really looked after it and now it is a National Trust property I am sure they will do a wonderful job of preserving it so that people will be able to enjoy it for years to come.

Best wishes and enjoy the rest of your week

Sadly it is difficult to park as it gets so busy and it is almost impossible to get a good clear shot of the yarn market

A fabulous photo of this fairytale castle with its massive towers and well tended topiary garden! The must have been very difficult to heat for the family....good that the NT now takes care of it.
Ecobird club has replied to Gudrun club
Thank you very much Gudrun. It is a beautiful castle but I imagine the upkeep is hugely expensive. In 1944 the family had to sell it off to a property company because of crippling death duties, staying on in the castle as tenants. They did however manage to repurchase it in 1954 but passing it on to the National Trust in 1976 did at least secure the property for future generations. The grounds are really lovely
