Originally called Marine Villa it was built as a seaside retreat for Vernon Wentworths of Wentworth Castle, Yorkshire. A photo taken from the beach c1905. The single storey structure was an octagonal music/drawing room. The house became a school in the c20th and suffered badly in WWII

Blackheath was partially demolished and stripped of its external decoration after World War Two by the architect Raymond Erith. Some think that Erith was a great architect, Im afraid Im not one of them! He destroyed far more than he contributed.
