I've sadly not spent that much time researching the reasons behind their demolition, although I do know a bit about some of the East Midlands, South Yorks, and South Lancs ones. Its amazing how many were demolished by local councils in the 1950s, 60s, and 70s. One well documented example is Markeaton Hall Derby which was given by the Mundy family so that it could become an art gallery. A local councilor is minuted as calling it a symbol of the exploitative class which ought to be destroyed. (It was demolished soon after).

A very high percentage of the recent losses have been either owned by the National Health Service (usually mental health services) or were recently local authority children's homes.

Unlike most of the pics I upload I do not own the original of this one, it is a scan of a copy print I brought in the late 1980s and I do not know who owns the original. I suspect its a copy of quite an early photo 1860s/70s? I do rather like the tone myself; do you think the original was very faded?
