Die Niagara Falls in den frühen 1980er Jahren ...
Die Niagara Falls* (der grosse 'Horseshoe Falls' - auch 'Canadian Falls' genannt, sowie die beiden kleineren Fälle 'American Falls' und 'Bridal Veil Falls') an der Grenze zwischen der Provinz Ontario (Kanada) und dem Bundesstaat New York (Vereinigten Staaten).
Der Niagara River entwässert den Eriesee und fliesst hier nach den über 50 Meter hohen Fällen weiter in den Ontariosee.
Seit 1882 wird ein Teil des Wassers zu den Kraftwerken für die Stromerzeugung umgeleitet. 1950 wurde in einem kanadisch-amerikanischen Vertrag festgelegt, dass während der Touristensaison im Tagesmittel maximal 50% und ausserhalb der Saison bis maximal 75% der Wassermenge zu den Kraftwerken umgeleitet werden darf (nachts wird die Wassermenge zusätzlich nochmals reduziert). Der Anblick ist trotz der Drosselung der Wassermenge gewaltig, als Nebeneffekt verringert sich die Erosion der Fälle merklich (aktuell beträgt die Erosionsrate etwa 30 Zentimeter pro Jahr, ohne die Drosselung wären es etwa 90cm pro Jahr).
Mit den Booten der 'Maid of the Mist' kann man Touren bis in die Gischt unter den Fällen machen ...
