Guimarães was the capital of Portucalensis County, which would become independent in 1140 (from the Kingdom of Leon, which recognized that status in 1143). The first king Afonso Henriques (Alphonse I), who lived his childhood and adolescence in this castle, achieved that independence, turning the Portucalensis County into the Kingdom of Portugal.
