I can feel a metaphysical poem stirring within me. Something about how we all need a golden retriever when we fall, are thrown, or throw ourselves into the water. And perhaps how irritating a retriever can be when we don’t want to be retrieved. Dogs are quite dogged. I prefer a cat that just waits on the harbour for fish to be brought in. Now, if the retriever could catch fish, the cat would certainly try to adopt the retriever. Then the cat would be prepared to lick and clean the retriever’s ears. I have seen this happen.
