Ambergate limekilns
The Clay Cross Company operated this impressive bank of 20 limekilns at Ambergate adjacent to the Cromford Canal. They were built by George Stephenson between 1837 and 1841 and supplied with stone from Crich Quarries via a metre gauge railway which can be seen in the right background as it descends a steep inclined plane. The kilns were finally closed in 1966 and have subsequently been demolished for a gas plant.
