Greece - Greek tortoise

Driving around in Greece we had seen already quite a lot of tortoises along the road. But this was the first one being so friendly to pose for the camera. Although I’m not sure I suppose it is (must be) a Greek tortoise, also known as common tortoise; one of five species of Mediterranean tortoises.

Depending on the subspecies, Greek tortoises will grow to between 11 and 20 centimeters. The Greek tortoise is a very long-lived animal, achieving a lifespan of upwards of more than 100 years, but in the wild, many do not live past the age of 20, due to predation and other factors.

Oh my. What a cutie pie!! You got a wonderful picture with super details and such a cute position! Interesting to learn more about them too...on our property I have seen one turtle many years ago. I've seen turtles at the edges of rivers too, but these guys aren't too common to see, so this is really neat!

BEST sighting: scuba diving, Steve and I have seen lots of sea turtles. They can be quite enormous...one day we were diving and a huge sea turtle swam by and turned its head to look me in the eye...an incredible experience. I adore them so much.

We hadden er al verschillende gezien, maar meestal waren ze net weer weg als we uit de auto kwamen. Deze was zo vriendelijk 'even' te wachten op de fotograaf. Heb hem nog wel even met z'n kop in de zon gezet voor de foto.
