I've checked online and find the town centre has recently been subjected to redevelopment. They seem to have rerouted Stramongate and pedestrianised the top part to make it look more like Same Town Anywhere, ruining the old-world charm with incongruous new buildings, garish shopfronts and tacky street clutter. The Hogarth building on the far right of your picture looks quite horrendous when seen full on. You've certainly made the best of a bad situation.
