Built in the Middle Ages on the shores of Lake Geneva, not far from Montreux in what is now the canton of Vaud, the fortress was the residence of the powerful Counts of Savoy from the 12th to the 16th century, until the arrival of the Bernese in 1536. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the castle inspired many writers and poets.
