Wheal Coates from Tubby's Head ~ for Pam!

Wheal Coates from Tubby's Head ~ for Pam!
Towanroath pumping engine house is seen on the cliff top. Its crucial function was to pump the mine shafts clear of water, night and day. And the Wheal Coates tin mine shafts extended far out below the sea!

A wonderful coastal image, it would have been a hard life in the mine

A fine picture there Andy'... and good info'..as with all old mines it's amazing what the miners could achieve with picks - shovels.. and other hand tools. Pure graft.
Cheers from Dave.

Subsea excavation was really impressive with the technology of the day. It's not trivial even now.

Such a beautiful coastline yet a short brutal life for those living there. Sounds similar to coal miners in Fife where mines went out into the Forth. Miners were often not free but bound to one employer who could sell their labour to a third party. That system continued until the 19th century.

Here it was different but equally horrible. The miners, if they wanted to work in the mine, had first of all to pay for the privilege!! Nearly all had to borrow to do this and who did they borrow from? Of course, the mine owner!! Capitalism at its very best, don'tya think!!

I wondered if there might be a similar nasty system. Capitalism as you say.

I have posted so many from this Tubby's Head vantage point that I think I overdo them ... but ... I realise it has been a long time since I did, so I have no worries about overkill this time round!
Many thanks, Keith!
