Carpobrotus edulis is native to South Africa. It is also known as Hottentot-fig,[1] ice plant, highway ice plant or pigface and in South Africa as the sour fig (suurvy; earlier: hotnotsvy), on account of its edible fruit.
On the Mediterranean coast, Carpobrotus has spread out rapidly and now parts of the coastline are completely covered by this invasive species.
A mine in paradise
The beach of Funtanamare, in south westerly Sardinia.
Just at right of this lovely beach there was a mine, now closed. This was the pipe which discharged the washing water of the ore into the sea.

Campionna Islet
One of my favourite places for spending some time by the sea. We decided to go there the first of the year 2012 and it was a glorious day.

December mood
The beach of Chia in a cold December morning.
Masua
Masua is a small mining town, now abandoned, in the south-westerly coast of Sardinia. Most of the mines were in the hills by the sea not far from this beach. The ore, after it was purified and ground, it was brought to this beach and loaded into small sailing boats which carried it to a nearby harbour where it was loaded into large cargo vessels.
That rock visible in the distance it is called nowadays "Pan di Zucchero", which is a fantasy name given to advertise the place for tourists.
In spite of the many mines and industrial plants still present the coast is very beautiful and much attended in summertime.
