The sculpture, the work of artist Alfie Bradley, named "Knife Angel," was created in Oswestry, Shropshire, by the British Ironwork Centre. It took two years to build.

The knives were handed in by 41 police forces around the country during amnesties and confiscations.

The campaign, "Save a Life, Surrender Your Knife," and the statue aims to raise awareness of the growing issue of knife crime throughout the UK.

"The monument was created for one purpose, to highlight this extensive problem. Both government and the educational system need to open their eyes to the epidemic," the British Ironwork Centre's website says.

Quite an amazing artwork but it's frightening just how many knives have been collected! Teachers these days also have to put up with pupils carrying flick knives and other weapons.

Excellent PiPs!

It is frightening, Gudrun, especially in schools. The best I can say is that these knives are now off the street, and at least we don't have a gun culture.,

It is sad the way its gone with knives. When I was young I could carry a bowie knife without ever thinking about harming anyone. (I used it when I went camping and fishing). These days you would get arrested for having one. I think its a shame that knives are only thought of as offensive weapons now rather than having a useful purpose.

Wonderful work to show case the objective of the campaign. It seems that people will finds ways to hurt others no matter what, be it guns, knives and what have you. The colors of the handles really do draw the eye into the image.
