The Sunday Challenge: 'Art'.

What is art? I have thought about that all week. For me it's the splash of green on the petals of a snowdrop, nacre on the inside of a shell, the shape of a snowflake, the logarithmic spiral of a snail shell, the ever changing pattern of clouds and waves. The list could go on for ever.

Whatever art is, humankind has always endeavoured to capture the essence of it. We admire cave paintings, the work of the great masters, sculpture, architecture etc,

The one thing we all have in common is that we enjoy art in all its various guises. One can see the pleasure and contentment on Mary's face as she potters about in her 'garden shed', totally absorbed in her work.

Maybe art is whatever one considers it to be.

A good question Amelia! I prefer paintings that are not just like a photograph, although very clever. I used to go to art classes and was lucky to have Kate Lynch as a teacher and I love her painting. Her husband is James Lynch and his paintings are amazing but I would love to have one of Kate's on my wall. I like the painting in your picture!

Art is so very subjective, Rosa, and i know exactly what you mean here. I have just started going back to art classes after 20 odd years of never lifting a paintbrush. It can be frustrating sometimes, spending a couple of hours on a piece and achieving very little. Nevertheless, it's totally absorbing and relaxing.

Thank you so much for the link. Kate could be very good with a bit of practice. ;-) I love her work!

What a lovely portrait! This certainly is artwork in progress! (though I suspect the painting is finished and she just posed for you;-)

Mary certainly hasn't finished this work, Gudrun. I asked her if I could wander up to her garden shed, and I spent at least an hour there while she continued to paint and chat. I took lots of candid photos of her and watched as she deftly added a line here and there that made such a difference to the work.

Maybe I'll post a photo of the completed painting one of these days. ;-)

Thank you, Roger. I really admire folks who can carry on working and chatting naturally in spite of the presence of a photographer. ;-)

A charming portrait of the artist at work. She seems quite relaxed with you being there which gives the image a very intimate atmosphere.

We did chat for about 15 minutes before I got the camera out of the bag, Keith. She was so self-absorbed in her work that she was totally unaware of what i was doing.

it's not an easy question Amelia, because it's very individual - it's practice, it's sensation, it's intuition, Hubs

I found the question difficult too, Hubs. It's such a personal point of view, and so is very complex to define.

Lovely photo, Amelia, this lady certainly finds real pleasure in her painting. I think you have summed things up very well when you said.... 'Maybe art is whatever one considers it to be.'

Beautifully lit and terrific subject Amelia. I agree that she clearly takes great pleasure in what she is doing and she hopes the pleasure is then gifted on to those who observe. She is clearly very adept! Terrific thought proving study

Totally absorbed in her passion. You have captured her so nicely Amelia. I am sure her gentle joy will be felt when her work is enjoyed by others. Art is what an individual determines it to be and that is the pure joy of art. :)

I love your compliment here, Chris. Mary is preparing for an exhibition of her her work in Oswestry, a local town on the Welsh borders. She entered a competition last year and, according to the judges, didn't win, but her work was the people's favourite so she won a personal exhibition. I look forward to seeing all her work.

Lovely portrait that really captures the sheer pleasure that Mary obviously gets from her hobby! As a child I was good at drawing, but have never really got t grips with paintbrushes (excuse the pun) ... maybe one day! ;)

According to Mary, everyone is an artist, Paul. Get out your pencils, charcoal, chalk - whatever you like and have a go. It's very relaxing. I spent yesterday afternoon painting. The result should go straight into the bin - but I'm keeping it. :-))

I like this Ad Reinhardt quote: "Art is everything. Everything else is everything else."
Suitably Delphic, I think.

Then again, I think most art is on a continuum from the Delphic ( inspiring, but sometimes misleading, always open to interpretation) to the banal--pretty, but sugary and unsatisfying. I like both... But nothing beats the thrill of going to Delphi...What a view!

Even in the dark!
